Prints & Pots An exhibition of prints by Walter Hoyle with ceramics by Denise Hoyle Opens Saturday 4 May and runs until Saturday 25 May 2013
Tutored by Edward Bawden at the Royal College of Art, Walter Hoyle (1922 -2000) became a close friend and moved to Great Bardfield in Essex in 1953 joining other artists of the day. He met his wife, Denise, when she visited the first exhibition of Great Bardfield Artists in 1954. Walter Hoyle taught printmaking at Cambridge School of Art whilst pursuing his own career as a printmaker and illustrator. His work, although initially influenced by his mentor, Bawden, became increasingly experimental. This exhibition is the first chance in many years to see the breadth of Hoyle's imagination and his craftsmanship as a printmaker.
Denise Hoyle was born and grew up in Paris. Denise received no formal art training and is primarily self-taught although she learnt about ceramics at evening classes. Her pots, made during the 1970s are inspired by artefacts she saw in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. Denise also produced collage books for her children and was commissioned by the post office to design a number of posters. Today she paints.
“Greetings from Eastbourne” For the Eastbourne Festival this year we have decided to do something a little different. We are holding an exhibition of vintage postcards. Emma has always liked collecting postcards and this exhibition combines views and, importantly, messages from Eastbourne. The messages on the postcards have been transcribed by calligrapher, Raymond D’Ancey. Raymond became deaf when he was 14 after contracting meningitis and this exhibition is in support of a local charity, the East Susses Hearing Resource Centre which provides hearing access for the deaf in Eastbourne and surrounding area. Raymond studied at Eastbourne School of Art in the 1950s and knew Robert Tavener.
The exhibition opens on Thursday 28 March and runs until Saturday 20 April. For more details on the Eastbourne Festival visit www.eastbournefestival.co.uk

Portcullis House - Jubilee SeriesSix artists' prints to mark the Jubilee To mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee the House of Commons Works of Art Committee is supporting UK printmakers and has commissioned six artists to create a series of prints about Portcullis House. The Queen opened Portcullis House, designed by architect Sir Michael Hopkins, in 2001.
Portcullis House sits on the Thames embankment alongside the Houses of Parliament and it is a building that is not well known by most people, which makes this commission all the more interesting The building is a busy hub of Parliamentary activity, providing offices, select committee rooms, a schools education suite, meeting rooms and facilities to support the thousands of people - MPs, Parliamentary staff and public visitors - who use it every week.
