Biography
Eric Ravilious was born in Eastbourne, East Sussex. He studied at Eastbourne School of Art and the Royal College of Art, London. He taught for a time at the Royal College and at the Ruskin Drawing School in Oxford. He was talented as both designer and artist producing wood engravings for book illustrations and designs for pottery and glass. He is known for his watercolours, often of English rural subjects. In 1939 he was appointed an Official War Artist and produced an outstanding body of work, including his watercolours of submarines. He died in 1942 in an air-crash off Iceland. His work is very highly regarded. The boadest collection of his work is held in the Towner Collection in Eastbourne.
