Jack Coutu

Jack Coutu, printmaker, watercolourist, sculptor and teacher was born in Farnham, Surrey and studied at Farnham School of Art before moving on to study Stained Glass at the Royal College of Art and Printmaking at Central School of Art (1951 - 54). He quickly became recognised for his work exhibiting at St Georges Gallery, London. Many more exhibitions were to follow including a two man show with Michael Rothenstein at Alecto Gallery in 1965. He became a member of the Royal Society of Painter Printmakers and active in the Printmakers Council. Coutu taught printmaking at Central School, 1957-65, then at Farnham, West Surrey College of Art and Design, 1965-85. He then concentrated on his work at a carver of netsuke for which he is highly regarded. His work is held in many important collections including the V + A , the Government Art Collection and the Arts Council.
