Arthur Hackney was born in Yorkshire and studied at Burselm School of Art, Yorkshire and later at the Royal College of Art in London. Between colleges he served in the Royal Navy 1942-46. He won a travelling scholarship to Rome with the Royal college of Art in 1949. Later he became teacher and then Head of Printmaking at West Surrey College of Art and Design (formerly Farnham School of Art ) until he retired. He is a Senior Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter/Printmakers and member of the Royal Watercolour Society. His work is held in many public collections including the V+A Museum, London.
